Key takeaways

  • Paid ChatGPT plans get GPT-6 Sol from October 7, while Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna starting October 8.
  • Intelligent UI lets ChatGPT answer with charts, maps, forms, buttons and on request tools like calculators and bill splitters.
  • OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering web search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant.

OpenAI is putting GPT-6 in front of every ChatGPT user this week, and the bigger change may be how answers look rather than what they say. GPT-6 Intelligent UI lets ChatGPT reply with charts, forms, maps, buttons and small working tools instead of only paragraphs of text. Paid subscribers started getting it on October 7, and free users begin receiving it on October 8, according to reports from Search Engine Journal and gHacks.

If a road trip question comes back with a map, or a recipe arrives with a cooking timeline beside it, this is why.

What OpenAI announced

OpenAI announced on October 7 that GPT-6 and a feature it calls Intelligent UI are rolling out in the Chat tab of ChatGPT for everyone. The company posted on X that Intelligent UI "delivers fast, interactive answers that make everyday questions more visual, complex topics easier to grasp, and interactive tools for your task available on the spot."

The models themselves are not brand new. GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna launched on September 22 for ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API, according to Search Engine Journal, but they were not available in regular chat at the time. This week's release brings them into the main conversation experience that most people use.

gHacks reports that OpenAI is aiming the release at more than 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users, which makes this one of the widest model rollouts the company has done.

Which version you get

The version depends on your plan:

  • Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users get GPT-6 Sol, starting October 7.
  • Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna, with the rollout beginning October 8.
  • Enterprise access depends on how a workplace admin has configured the account.

You do not need to switch anything on. GPT-6 replaces the "Latest" option in the model menu, while GPT-5.6 Sol stays available as a separate choice, according to Search Engine Journal. OpenAI says the models behind ChatGPT Work and Codex are not changing as part of this update.

There are a few gaps. The Pro thinking level runs on GPT-6 Astra but does not support Intelligent UI, and older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows also lack the feature. If you do not see it, updating the app is the first thing to try.

How GPT-6 Intelligent UI works

The core idea is that GPT-6 was trained to pick a layout that fits the question. A comparison can come back side by side. A concept can turn into a diagram you can click through. An explanation can include a slider or input box, so you change a number and watch the result update.

You can also ask for a tool directly. OpenAI's own examples include a calculator to explore how savings could grow, a bill splitter for a group dinner, and a simple game played inside the conversation. When plain text is the most useful format, ChatGPT still answers in plain text.

Under the hood, gHacks reports that the system uses a library of native components that can be streamed, plus a compiler that builds the interface while the model is still generating. In practice that means the layout appears piece by piece rather than all at once at the end.

This did not appear out of nowhere. ChatGPT added interactive charts in June and interactive modules for more than 70 math and science topics in March, according to Search Engine Journal. Intelligent UI pulls those pieces into a general system that can decide on its own when to use them.

OpenAI has also been candid that the design judgment is not finished. The company acknowledges the model sometimes still needs work deciding what a good layout looks like, so expect some answers to be more visual than they need to be.

Turning it off

On the web, you can switch off the "Layout and visuals" setting if you prefer plain answers. Search Engine Journal notes that some visual elements may still appear even with the setting off.

Faster answers, even while it is still thinking

The second big change is speed. GPT-6 can start answering while it is still reasoning or running tools such as web search, and it can add further insights to its reply without you asking a follow-up question.

OpenAI says that for questions that need a web search, GPT-6 Instant begins answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. In an internal test of everyday agent style tasks, the company says GPT-6 at its Extra High thinking level starts answering in about the same time as GPT-5.6 Medium, while scoring better than GPT-5.6 Extra High. OpenAI did not publish the exact metric behind that comparison, so treat it as a company claim rather than an independent benchmark.

The company also says GPT-6 makes better choices about when to search the web and finds supporting information more reliably.

Why it matters

For everyday users, this shifts ChatGPT a step away from being a text box and toward being a place where small pieces of software get built on demand. If you used to search for a mortgage calculator or a tip splitter, you can now ask ChatGPT to make one and use it without leaving the chat.

That has real consequences for the wider web. Search Engine Journal points out that calculator and converter pages could face new competition, since simple tools like these are the easiest things for an AI to recreate. Google has been moving in a similar direction with generative layouts in AI Overviews, so publishers and small tool makers are being squeezed from two sides.

There is also an open question about sourcing. The announcement does not explain how sources will be shown for charts, comparisons or generated tools. Answers that use web search can include citations through a Sources button when available, but a chart built from several sites may not make it obvious where each number came from.

The free tier matters too. Rival chatbots have been tightening what free users get. Google, for example, is limiting Gemini free users to Flash Lite, while OpenAI is pushing a new model generation down to its free and Go plans the day after paid users get it.

Safety claims

OpenAI says GPT-6 is harder to talk out of its safety training than GPT-5.6 Sol, especially in multi turn attacks where someone adjusts their approach over a long conversation. The company says it also trained the model to avoid refusing harmless requests for no good reason. The results are documented in a published system card.

That comes after a turbulent stretch for OpenAI's model lineup. Last month the company shelved GPT-6.1 Astra after safety tests and shipped Sol instead, so how GPT-6 holds up in real use will be watched closely.

What to do now

If you use ChatGPT regularly, a few practical steps will help you get the most out of the update:

  1. Update your app. Older desktop versions do not support Intelligent UI.
  2. Ask for the format you want. If you need a table, a chart or a calculator, say so. Clear requests still beat guessing, and our guide to writing better AI prompts covers the basics.
  3. Check the numbers. A polished chart can look more authoritative than it is. Open the sources when they are offered, and verify anything that affects money or health.
  4. Turn off visuals if they get in the way. The Layout and visuals setting on the web gives you plainer answers.

What to watch next

The rollout is gradual, so not every account will see Intelligent UI on day one. Watch for how quickly it reaches the mobile apps, whether OpenAI adds clearer citations to generated charts and tools, and whether developers get access to the same interface components through the API.

It will also be worth watching how this blends with AI agents. A chatbot that can build a small tool on request is close to one that can take actions for you, a topic we cover in our explainer on what AI agents can and cannot do. For more coverage, visit our AI news section.
