Key takeaways

  • Claude Duet is a standalone proactive agent app on iOS, Android and claude.ai, built around Claude Opus 5.5.
  • The research preview opens by waitlist to US Pro and Max subscribers and shares the same usage limits as the rest of Claude.
  • Duet asks for approval before payments, messages, signatures or deletions, and will not trade securities or move money between accounts.

Anthropic has opened a research preview of Claude Duet, a separate app where Claude acts as a proactive agent that watches your connected accounts, tells you what needs attention, and finishes tasks while you are away. The Claude Duet waitlist opened on October 21 for Pro and Max subscribers in the United States, and the name quickly started climbing in US search trends as people tried to figure out what it does and whether they can get in.

The pitch is simple. Instead of opening a chat window and asking for help, you let Claude come to you. Anthropic says it built Duet for professionals and small business owners "with more on their plates than they can track." Below is what the app does, how access works, where Anthropic says it still falls short, and what to think about before you connect your email and business tools to it.

What Anthropic announced

According to Anthropic's announcement, Claude Duet is a new app available on iOS, Android and the web through claude.ai. It is designed around Claude Opus 5.5, the company's top model, and it runs as a standalone product rather than a mode inside the regular Claude app.

Each morning, Duet sends a short brief that covers the most important items across the apps you have connected. During the day it keeps an eye on those apps and messages you only when something needs a decision. You can also hand it work directly. Anthropic lists examples that range from scheduling meetings to building dashboards that pull from dozens of tools, creating sales or financial forecasts, prototyping and building web apps.

The key technical detail is where the work happens. Duet gets its own virtual machine with its own browser, so your laptop or phone does not have to stay on while it works. You get a notification when a task is done or when it needs you to review something.

TechCrunch placed the launch alongside a crowded field of personal agents, including Meta Muse and OpenAI Dots. Engadget put it more bluntly, writing that Anthropic is "late to the party" but now has an agent to match those rivals.

How the Claude Duet waitlist works

Access is limited for now. Anthropic says the preview opens by waitlist, starting with Pro and Max subscribers in the US. You join through the Claude Duet page on Claude's website, and invitations roll out from there.

Does it cost extra?

Anthropic's own article says that for the research preview, Duet is included in Pro and Max plans and uses the same usage limits as the rest of Claude. Engadget reported a slightly different framing, saying Pro subscribers would get access once the agent reaches general availability. The safest reading is that there is no separate Duet price during the preview, but plans could change when it leaves preview.

Usage limits matter more than usual

This is the part many early users will feel first. Duet shares your plan's limits with everything else you do in Claude, including Claude Code, according to Engadget. Anthropic says Duet checks your connected accounts "every few hours, because checking nonstop would use up your plan's limits much faster." Background checks count against your allowance, and bigger jobs, such as a financial model or a slide deck, take more model turns and more background work. You can set what Duet tells you about and how often, which is also the main way to control how much of your plan it uses.

If you already lean on Claude heavily for coding or writing, it is worth watching your usage for the first week before you hand Duet a long list of standing jobs. Our explainer on what AI agents can do and where they still fail covers why agent work tends to burn through more compute than a normal chat.

Which apps Claude Duet connects to

Anthropic says Duet can use more than 6,000 connectors and plugins from the Claude Marketplace. The examples it gives are aimed squarely at small businesses:

  • Gmail and Slack for messages and threads
  • Intuit QuickBooks and Stripe, for example to spot unpaid invoices
  • Gusto for payroll
  • LinkedIn for job posts, after you approve them
  • Docusign, HubSpot, Canva and Shopify

For purchases, Duet can pay through Link, Stripe's digital wallet, using a virtual card so your real card number is not shared. It also supports Shop Pay from Shopify. Anthropic says that "coming soon," with your permission, Duet will be able to sign in to sites using logins you have saved in 1Password. A Shopify storefront visual editor is also listed as coming soon.

Why it matters

Chat assistants wait for a question. Duet is built to act first, which changes the relationship. A small business owner who would normally scan an inbox, a payments dashboard and a team chat every morning can, in theory, get one summary that flags the three things that actually need a reply.

Anthropic shared feedback from early testers that points at exactly that use. Amin Ebrahimi, owner of the restaurant group Shahs of Kabob, which has about 110 employees, said "I don't need to open up 100 tabs." Jess Provencher, a broker and owner at Pro Homes, described Duet's alerts as "exactly the kind of thing I want caught without having to ask."

It also matters for Anthropic's business. The company has been leaning into agents for months, and Duet is its first consumer facing product built entirely around that idea. It arrives as rivals push their own agent apps, including Meta's Muse Wonder model, and as Anthropic's revenue grows quickly, as we covered in our report on its third quarter results.

The safety rules built into Duet

An agent that can read your email and pay invoices needs firm limits, and Anthropic spends a good part of its announcement on them.

Approval before action

Before Duet sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows you exactly what it plans to do and waits for your approval. Some actions are off the table even if you approve them. Anthropic says Duet will not trade securities or move money between accounts. You can disconnect any app at any time.

Passwords and sensitive data

Anthropic says credential handling follows the design of Claude Managed Agents, so Duet "never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens." A new classifier is designed to reject requests to share the most sensitive tier of information, including credit card numbers and government identification. Health and personal finance details are sent only when you explicitly tell Duet to send them.

The company also says Duet uses defenses against prompt injection, the trick where a malicious web page or email tries to give an agent hidden instructions. Red teams and an outside security firm tested the app, and it falls under Anthropic's public bug bounty program on HackerOne. Engadget noted Anthropic said it would share more safety details in the coming days.

Where Anthropic says it falls short

Anthropic is unusually direct about the gaps. Its announcement says Duet "still might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent." Personal errands such as booking tickets "aren't quite as strong" as work tasks. TechCrunch repeated that point, noting the agent is not good at errands and cannot show you its browser activity as it happens.

That last limitation is worth noting. Some rival agents let you watch the browser in real time. With Duet, you see results and approval requests, not the clicks in between. Duet also lives in its own app, separate from the main Claude app, so you will be switching between two apps if you use both.

Who should try it, and what to do first

Duet looks most useful for people who juggle several business tools every day: freelancers, consultants, agents, shop owners and small teams. If most of your day happens in one inbox, the morning brief may add less.

If you get an invite, a careful setup helps:

  1. Start with two or three connectors you check most, such as email and your payment tool, rather than everything at once.
  2. Set alert frequency low at first, then raise it once you see how much of your plan Duet uses.
  3. Read every approval screen fully before you tap approve, especially for payments and outgoing messages.
  4. Review which apps are connected after the first week and remove any you do not need.

Good account hygiene still applies. If you have not already, our guide to protecting your online accounts in 10 minutes covers the basics, like two factor sign in, that matter more once an agent can act inside those accounts.

What to watch next

The big open questions are pricing and reach. Anthropic has not said when Duet will leave preview, whether it will come to the free plan or other countries, or whether it will stay bundled with Pro and Max. Watch for the extra safety details Anthropic promised, for the 1Password sign in feature, and for whether early users find the usage limits workable. You can follow every update on our AI news page.
