Apple's smallest speaker just got its first real update in six years. The HomePod mini 2, announced on Tuesday at Apple's "Welcome home" event in New York, costs $149, adds a light show on top called Sound Glow, runs on a newer chip and can now team up with three more speakers for surround sound with Apple TV. Pre-orders opened on October 13, and the speaker goes on sale Friday, October 30.
The original HomePod mini arrived in November 2020. A lot has changed since, from Matter smart home gear to Apple's new Siri AI. Here is what the new model actually brings, what it costs you, and whether it is worth replacing the one already on your shelf.
What is new in the HomePod mini 2
From the outside, not much. 9to5Mac reports the HomePod mini 2 keeps the same round design as the original. The changes are inside and on top.
A faster chip for computational audio
MacRumors reports that the new speaker runs on an S10 chip, the same family Apple uses in its watches. Apple says the chip powers computational audio that adjusts dynamic range, loudness and acoustic performance in real time. In plain terms, the speaker should tune itself to the song and the room rather than playing everything the same way.
Sound Glow
The most visible change is Sound Glow. The top of the speaker turns into a small light display that pulses with the music and reacts to bass and treble as they happen. According to 9to5Mac, the colors are pulled from the album artwork of whatever is playing, so each song gets its own color scheme. Ambient soundscapes, such as rain, get their own animations too.
It is a small touch, but it gives the HomePod mini 2 a reason to sit somewhere you can see it.
New colors
Apple is selling the speaker in pink, green, blue, white and midnight. 9to5Mac says some of these are refreshed shades and some return from earlier models.
Surround sound with the new Apple TV 4K
The feature home theater fans will care about most is four speaker surround. Four HomePod mini 2 units can pair with the new fourth generation Apple TV 4K, which Apple announced the same day at $299. MacRumors reports that the speakers and the Apple TV detect where each speaker sits in the room and calibrate their levels to fit the space.
MacObserver, citing Apple, says the setup needs matched front and rear pairs, and it also works with second generation HomePod speakers. That means you could build a surround system from four minis instead of buying a soundbar, though four speakers at $149 each adds up to nearly $600 before the Apple TV.
The HomePod mini 2 can also act as a speaker for a Mac, MacRumors reports.
Siri AI is coming, but not on day one
This is the catch. The HomePod mini 2 is built for Apple's new Siri AI assistant, but the assistant will not be ready when the speaker ships. MacObserver says Apple plans to bring Siri AI to the speaker in a future software update, in English, in the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the UK. No date has been given.
When it does arrive, Siri AI will be able to recognize up to six people by voice and connect to each person's device for personal information such as Messages, according to MacRumors. That requires an Apple Intelligence enabled iPhone or iPad. 9to5Mac describes Siri AI as running on what Apple calls "the latest generation of Apple Foundation Models."
So at launch, you are buying better sound, Sound Glow and surround support. The smarter assistant is a promise for later.
Smart home and safety features
The new speaker still works as a home hub and controls smart home devices, just like the first model. It also listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through Sound Recognition and sends you an alert if it hears one, according to MacRumors.
That matters more this year because Apple is building out a bigger home lineup. The company also announced HomeView, a $299 smart display, and a set of partner accessories including locks, cameras and thermostats. The price went up
The HomePod mini 2 costs more than the speaker it replaces. According to 9to5Mac, the original HomePod mini launched at $99 in 2020, and Apple raised its price to $129 earlier in 2026. At $149, the new model is $50 more than the original launch price and $20 more than this year's price.
For context, that puts it closer to premium compact speakers than budget smart speakers. Whether it is worth it depends on what you already own.
Who should upgrade
Buy it if you want surround sound with the new Apple TV 4K, you are building an Apple based smart home from scratch, or your current speaker is old and you want better audio now.
Wait if you mainly want the new Siri AI. It is not available at launch, and there is no firm date. Your first generation HomePod mini still works as a home hub and speaker.
Think about headphones too. If most of your listening happens on the go, a speaker is the wrong upgrade. Our guide on how to choose wireless earbuds may be a better place to start.
Where you can buy it
MacObserver, citing Apple, says the speaker is available in the U.S. and more than 23 other countries and regions, in stores starting October 30. It runs HomePod software 27.2, according to 9to5Mac.
What to watch next
The real test comes when Siri AI reaches the speaker. Apple has positioned this whole home lineup around the new assistant, and its performance on a small speaker without a screen will shape how people feel about the product. Also watch early reviews of the surround mode and Sound Glow, and see whether Apple brings these features to older HomePods.
Apple is not done for the month either, with reports pointing to a touchscreen MacBook Pro on October 27. Follow our gadgets coverage for updates.
