Key takeaways

  • Apple began selling iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max parts, plus new Mac Studio and Mac mini parts, on October 20.
  • A battery costs $129, a Pro display $329 and the rear camera $249, with credits for returned parts and a $49 tool kit rental.
  • Reported comparisons show home repairs save only about $10 to $20 versus Apple out of warranty prices.

Apple has started selling official iPhone 18 Pro repair parts through its Self Service Repair Store, giving owners of the new flagship a way to replace a battery, screen or camera at home. The parts went live on Tuesday, October 20, alongside components for the latest Mac Studio and Mac mini. The catch, once you add up the numbers, is that doing it yourself often saves very little money.

Here is what is available, what it costs and whether a home repair makes sense for you.

What Apple is selling

According to 9to5Mac and GSMArena, the store now carries parts for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The list covers the main things that break or wear out:

  • Battery
  • Display
  • Back glass
  • Rear camera and front camera
  • Enclosure
  • Logic board
  • Taptic Engine
  • Top and bottom speakers
  • Main microphone
  • SIM tray

Apple also sells the supporting supplies each procedure needs, such as adhesive cutters, suction cups, nylon probes, adhesive removal tools, torque drivers and screws, according to 9to5Mac.

Tech Between the Lines reported that the parts are sold in the United States, Canada and Europe, and that one Pro Max battery (the eSIM version) is still marked as coming soon. The iPhone Duo, Apple's newest phone, is not part of this round.

Mac parts too

The update is not only about phones. 9to5Mac reported parts for the M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio, including Thunderbolt and USB C ports, fans, speakers, SSD modules, logic boards and power supplies. Recent Mac mini models get fans, speakers, logic boards and power supplies, among other parts.

iPhone 18 Pro repair parts prices

Apple's model is simple. You buy a new part at full price, then send back the old one for a credit. Here are the main prices reported by GSMArena and Tech Between the Lines, before tax:

| Part | Price | Return credit | Net part cost | |---|---|---|---| | Battery (Pro and Pro Max) | $129 | $61.92 | $67.08 | | Display (Pro) | $329 | $16.45 | $312.55 | | Display (Pro Max) | $379 | $18.95 | $360.05 | | Rear camera | $249 | $59.76 | $189.24 | | Front camera | $199 | not listed | $151.24 after credit | | Back glass | $159 | not listed | $120.84 after credit |

GSMArena noted that the rear camera costs the same $249 as last year's iPhone 17 Pro, even though the iPhone 18 Pro models add a variable aperture camera system. Tech Between the Lines said the battery is about $10 more than the iPhone 17 Pro's was.

Do not forget the tool kit

Most people do not own Apple's specialized repair tools, so Apple rents them. A seven day rental costs $49, with shipping included, according to Tech Between the Lines. Apple places a hold on your card for the full value of the kit, you need to drop it off with UPS by day seven, and the hold can take five to seven business days to clear.

Cult of Mac, in a story syndicated by Yahoo, also warned that some accessories like screws and cowling cost extra, and said Apple's replacement part prices may be on the higher side.

Does DIY actually save money?

This is where things get interesting. Tech Between the Lines compared the total cost of a home repair, including the tool rental, with Apple's own out of warranty repair prices:

  • Battery: about $116.08 at home versus $129 at Apple, a saving of $12.92.
  • Display (Pro): about $361.55 at home versus $379 at Apple.
  • Rear camera: about $238.24 at home versus $249 at Apple.

In other words, you are saving somewhere between roughly $10 and $20 for doing the work yourself, taking on the risk of a mistake and waiting for parts and tools to ship. For many people, a trip to an Apple Store or an authorized repair shop will be the easier call.

The math changes in a few cases. If you already own the right tools, you skip the $49 rental and the savings grow. If you have several devices to fix, one rental can cover more than one job within the week. And if you live far from an authorized repair location, the convenience of fixing it at your kitchen table may be worth more than the dollar difference.

Who should consider a home repair

Confident tinkerers. If you have replaced phone parts before and you are comfortable with heat, adhesive and tiny screws, Apple's official manuals and genuine parts make the job more predictable than third party kits.

Repair shops and IT teams. Small shops and company tech departments that fix many iPhones can buy their own tools once and benefit more from the part credits.

Everyone else. If you have never opened a phone, the savings probably are not worth the risk. A cracked display or a damaged cable during repair can cost far more than the $20 you saved.

Before you order, check your warranty status and any AppleCare coverage. A covered repair through Apple may cost you less than any of these prices.

Why this matters for iPhone 18 Pro owners

The iPhone 18 Pro has only recently reached buyers, and Apple has already faced questions about demand, as covered in our story on Apple cutting iPhone 18 Pro production. Making parts available this quickly is a plus for long term ownership. Batteries wear out, and having official replacements on day one of a phone's life cycle makes it easier to keep a device for years.

It is also part of a busy season for Apple hardware. The company has a run of launches lined up, which we outlined in Apple's product releases over the next four Fridays, and the iPhone Duo is in high demand, as our report on iPhone Duo backorders explains. Duo owners will need to wait for their own parts list, and in the meantime may want to read our guide to the iPhone Duo case adhesive strips.

What to watch next

The next items to watch are the missing Pro Max eSIM battery, which Apple lists as coming soon, and whether the iPhone Duo joins the program. It will also be worth watching whether Apple adjusts prices or tool rental terms as more owners compare home repair costs with in store service.
