Key takeaways

  • Apple says iPhone Duo walk-in stock will be limited on October 23 and expects it to sell out quickly.
  • US, Canada, UK, Germany and several other countries get limited walk-in units, while France, China, Japan, India and others require pickup reservations.
  • Online delivery times have reportedly slipped to late January, making launch day store stock one of the fastest ways to get one.

The iPhone Duo launch day is here, and if you were hoping to stroll into an Apple Store and walk out with one, your odds depend heavily on where you live. Apple's first foldable iPhone goes on sale in stores today, Friday, October 23, but Apple has warned that walk-in supply will be "limited," and in some countries walk-in buying is not an option at all.

According to MacRumors and MacTrast, which both published Apple's statement on October 21, stores in the United States will have a small number of units for customers without a reservation. Apple also said it expects that supply to sell out quickly. Here is what we know, and what you can do if you still want one before the holidays.

What Apple said about iPhone Duo launch day stock

Apple shared a short statement with the press ahead of launch. "On Friday morning, our teams look forward to welcoming customers at Apple Stores to experience iPhone Duo and the incredible iPhone line-up for themselves," the company said, according to both MacRumors and MacTrast.

It then added the key line for shoppers: "Apple Stores will have limited iPhone Duo available for walk-in customers, and we're working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers' hands as quickly as possible."

MacRumors reported that Apple described pre-order demand as "extraordinary" and expects in-store supply to sell out fast on Friday. MacTrast, citing the Financial Times, said Apple called demand "nothing short of extraordinary."

Why stores are holding back

Limiting walk-in stock is not only about how many units Apple has. MacRumors said Apple is restricting walk-in sales in part to manage crowd sizes and as an anti-scalping measure. A hot first generation device with long online wait times is a natural target for resellers, and capping in-store supply makes bulk buying harder.

Where you can and cannot walk in

The country lists in both reports match. This is the clearest picture of launch day availability.

Limited walk-in stock

Apple Stores in these countries will have some iPhone Duo units for walk-in customers:

  • United States
  • Canada and Mexico
  • United Kingdom
  • Australia and Singapore
  • Germany, Austria and Switzerland
  • Belgium and the Netherlands
  • Spain and Sweden
  • Türkiye

Italy is a partial case. Only certain Apple Stores there will have walk-in supply, and Apple did not name them. In Macao, walk-in sales are available only on launch day, with limited inventory.

No walk-in sales on launch day

In France, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the UAE, you cannot just show up and buy one. Customers there need an in-store pickup reservation for a set time slot, made through Apple's online store, according to MacRumors and MacTrast.

Why this matters for US buyers

For shoppers in the US, "limited" is the word to take seriously. Online orders have already been pushed out a long way. MacTrast, citing the Financial Times, reported that delivery times had slipped until late January. We covered that delay in our earlier piece on the iPhone Duo being backordered into January.

That makes today's in-store stock one of the few ways to get the device in 2026 without waiting months. It also means many people who line up will leave empty handed. Apple has not said how many units each store will receive.

What the iPhone Duo is

MacRumors describes the iPhone Duo as Apple's first foldable iPhone, with a book style design that pairs a 5.4 inch outer display with a 7.6 inch inner display. It opened for pre-orders on Friday, October 16. If you missed that window, our iPhone Duo pre-order guide explains how the ordering process worked.

The launch also arrives in a tough year for the phone business overall. Global shipments recently hit what analysts called a 14 year low for the third quarter. A foldable iPhone that draws long lines would be a welcome sign for Apple and its retail partners.

What to do if you want one today

Go early, and have a backup plan

If you live in one of the walk-in countries, the safest move is to arrive at your local Apple Store before opening. Apple's own warning that supply will sell out quickly suggests late morning visits may come too late. Have your payment method and Apple Account ready to speed up checkout.

Watch for pickup reservations

MacRumors reported that Apple's online store was advising customers to check back on Saturday, October 24, for pickup reservations. That means reservations may not be available today, but checking the Apple Store app over the weekend could get you a slot without a long wait. Stock tends to appear in small batches, so check more than once.

Keep your online order

If you already pre-ordered and are waiting for a January delivery, think twice before canceling. Canceling sends you to the back of the line. Some buyers keep their online order as insurance while trying their luck in store, then cancel whichever comes second, if the retailer allows it.

Be careful with resellers

High demand and tight supply often bring inflated resale listings. Buy from Apple, a major carrier or a well known retailer. If you plan to protect your new foldable, read our report on iPhone Duo cases and adhesive strips before buying an accessory.

What to watch next

  • Restock timing. Apple has not said when stores will get more units. Watch for pickup slots opening up after the weekend.
  • Shipping estimates. If online delivery dates start moving earlier than late January, it is a sign production is catching up.
  • Expansion of walk-in sales. Countries that need reservations today may open walk-in buying once demand settles.
  • More Apple launches. Apple still has several products rolling out this month, as we noted in our look at Apple's next four Friday releases.
