Key takeaways
- You have to cancel ChatGPT in the same place you paid, so a plan bought in the iPhone app is canceled in Apple settings, not on chatgpt.com.
- OpenAI advises canceling at least 24 hours before your next billing date, and you keep paid features until the current period ends.
- Canceling does not delete your account or chats, and deleting the app or your account will not stop an App Store or Google Play subscription.

If you want to know how to cancel a ChatGPT subscription, the first thing to figure out is who bills you. OpenAI, Apple and Google each run their own checkout, and the cancel button only lives in the place where you paid. This guide is for anyone on a paid personal plan (Go, Plus or Pro) or a small Business workspace. Once you know where the charge comes from, the whole thing takes about five minutes.
Canceling stops the next renewal. It does not end your access right away, and it does not delete your account or your chats. When the paid period runs out, your account drops back to the free plan.
Before You Start Canceling ChatGPT
A minute of prep saves you from canceling in the wrong place, or from getting charged one more time.
- Find the receipt. Search your email for the last ChatGPT charge. A receipt from OpenAI means you pay on the web. "Receipt from Apple" means the App Store. A Google Play order email means Google.
- Check your next billing date. OpenAI says billing recurs on the date you first subscribed, so if you signed up on the 12th, you are charged on the 12th of each month.
- Give yourself a day of margin. OpenAI's help page says to cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next charge.
- Sign in to the right account. If you have more than one email or Apple Account, use the one that appears on the receipt.
Cancel on the Web When OpenAI Bills You
If you subscribed at chatgpt.com, or your receipt came straight from OpenAI, cancel from a browser. The app on your phone will not show a cancel button for a web subscription.
- Go to chatgpt.com and sign in with the account that was charged.
- Click your profile icon or name in the corner of the sidebar to open the account menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open the billing or account section that shows your current plan.
- Select the option to manage or cancel your plan, then confirm.
The exact labels have shifted over time. OpenAI's cancellation article describes a path through "My Plan" and then "Manage my subscription," which sends you to a Stripe payment page where you pick Cancel Plan. Newer accounts show the same control inside Settings instead. Either way, you end on a screen that confirms the plan will not renew.
OpenAI states that cancellation takes effect the day after your next billing date, so you can keep using paid features until then.
Cancel on iPhone or iPad When Apple Bills You
If you upgraded inside the ChatGPT app on an iPhone or iPad, Apple holds the subscription. Canceling on chatgpt.com will not stop it, and deleting the app does nothing either.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel Subscription. You might need to scroll down to see it.
Apple's support page notes that if there is no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already canceled.
On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, click your name again on the next page, then choose Subscriptions, pick ChatGPT and click Cancel Subscription. Apple also lets you manage subscriptions in a browser at account.apple.com, which helps if your iPhone is not handy.
If ChatGPT does not appear in the list, look at the Apple receipt. It may show a different Apple Account, such as an old one you still own or a family member's. Apple says you cannot cancel a family member's subscription for them, so they have to do it.

Cancel on Android When Google Play Bills You
Upgrading from the ChatGPT Android app puts the subscription on Google Play. Google's help page warns that uninstalling the app will not cancel your subscription.
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Go to your subscriptions in Google Play. The quickest route is play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions, which opens the list on your phone.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel subscription.
- Follow the prompts to confirm.
You can do the same from a computer by signing in at play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions with the Google Account that pays. According to Google Play Help, you keep access for the time you already paid for, and the plan simply does not renew.
Google also offers a pause option for some apps. Pause lengths range from one week to three months depending on the app, and a pause starts at the end of the current billing period. If you only need a break, it is worth checking whether ChatGPT shows that option.
Cancel a ChatGPT Business Workspace
Business plans are canceled at the workspace level, and only a workspace owner can do it. Members will not see the option.
- Sign in at chatgpt.com as the workspace owner.
- Open Workspace settings.
- Go to Billing.
- Choose Manage plan, then Cancel subscription.
Enterprise and Edu plans are not covered by this self service flow, so those go through your organization's OpenAI account contact.
Refunds and What Happens to Your Chats
OpenAI's help article says subscription fees are non refundable, and canceling never triggers a refund on its own. If you think you were billed in error, the OpenAI Help Center has a refund request article and a support chat. For Apple billed plans, refund requests go through Apple's reportaproblem.apple.com page, not OpenAI. Google Play has its own refund rules and request form.
Your conversations stay put after you cancel. You lose access to paid features like higher limits and newer models when the period ends, but your chat history stays on the free account. If you later decide to delete the whole account, cancel the subscription first. Deleting an account on the web does not cancel an App Store subscription, so you could keep paying Apple for an account that no longer exists.

When the Cancel Option Is Missing or Fails
Most cancel problems come down to looking in the wrong place. Work through these in order.
- No billing section in ChatGPT settings. You probably pay through Apple or Google. Check those subscription lists instead.
- ChatGPT is missing from Apple or Google subscriptions. You probably pay OpenAI directly, or the plan sits under another account. Match the email on the receipt.
- You were charged on two platforms. This happens when people subscribe on the web and again in the app. OpenAI has a help article on avoiding double charges. Cancel the one you do not want in its own store, then contact the right company about the extra charge.
- The settings page will not load. Try another browser or a private window, and sign out and back in. Our ChatGPT not working fixes cover login and loading issues.
- You do not recognize the charge at all. Check your bank statement for the company name that billed you, and contact your card issuer if it is not yours.
If you are trimming more than one service, our guide on how to find and cancel forgotten subscriptions walks through the Apple, Google and Amazon lists in one pass. You can find more ChatGPT guides in our AI section.
One last check: after you cancel, open the same subscription screen again. You should see an end date instead of a renewal date. Take a screenshot of it, and you have proof if a charge ever shows up later.
