Buy a Pixel if you want the most zoom and the longest written software promise for your money. Buy an iPhone if your watch, laptop, tablet or family group chat already runs on Apple, because the iPhone vs Pixel choice now depends far more on what surrounds the phone than on the phone itself. The two lineups line up almost tier for tier on price, which makes a fair comparison easier than it has been in years.

All prices here are US starting prices as of October 2026. Apple's figures come from its own site and BGR's lineup roundup, and Google's come from its August launch pricing as reported by TechRepublic. If you are still deciding between platforms in general, our iPhone vs Android guide covers the bigger picture.

How the iPhone and Pixel lineups differ

  • Entry flagship: iPhone 17 and Pixel 11 both start at $899 with 256GB of storage.
  • Pro models: iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while Pixel 11 Pro starts at $1,099. The larger iPhone 18 Pro Max and Pixel 11 Pro XL both start at $1,299.
  • Foldables: iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold at $1,899.
  • Zoom on the cheaper flagship: Pixel 11 has a dedicated 5x telephoto camera. iPhone 17 stops at a 2x optical quality crop from its main sensor.
  • Software support: Google puts 7 years of Android and security updates in writing for Pixel 8 and later. Apple's spec pages do not list a support period.
  • AI assistant: Pixels lean on Gemini. Apple's new Siri AI is still labeled beta in iOS 27 and launches in English first.
  • Charging: every Pixel 11 has Pixelsnap magnets with Qi2.2 wireless charging at up to 25W.
  • Lock in: iMessage, FaceTime and Apple Watch tie you to iPhone. A Pixel fits better if your digital life already sits in Gmail, Google Photos and Google Drive.

iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 Pro: Apple's case

Apple currently sells the iPhone 17e, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the iPhone Duo foldable, with the older iPhone 16 still on sale at $799. According to BGR, Apple dropped the iPhone 17 Pro models when the 18 Pro arrived and raised the entry price of the Pro by $100. A regular iPhone 18 is not out yet; reports point to spring 2027.

Strengths of the iPhone

The iPhone 18 Pro has an unusually flexible camera for a phone. According to Apple's iPhone 18 Pro specs, the 48MP main camera has a variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4.0, and the phone adds a 4x telephoto plus an 8x optical quality setting, for a 16x optical quality range in total. That variable aperture is the kind of control usually found on dedicated cameras, useful for close ups and bright daylight.

Battery claims are strong on paper. Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro Max for up to 45 hours of video playback and the smaller 18 Pro for up to 36 hours. The iPhone 17 is rated for up to 30 hours.

The other big strength is everything around the phone. iMessage and FaceTime work out of the box with other Apple users, and an Apple Watch needs an iPhone to pair. If your household shares photos, locations and purchases through Apple, staying put saves real hassle.

Weak spots of the iPhone

The iPhone 17 at $899 has no true telephoto lens. Its 2x setting is a crop from the main sensor, and digital zoom tops out at 10x. At the same price, the Pixel 11 gives you a separate 5x zoom camera.

Apple's smarter assistant is also not finished. Apple's own footnotes on the iPhone 18 Pro specs page say it is available in beta in iOS 27, English only at the start, and not initially in the EU. If AI help is the reason you are upgrading, that matters.

Finally, the Pro now costs more. At $1,199, the iPhone 18 Pro is $100 above the Pixel 11 Pro. If repair costs worry you, see our look at iPhone 18 Pro repair parts prices before you buy.

Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro: Google's case

Google's current lineup is the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, Pixel 11 Pro Fold and the cheaper Pixel 10a. All four Pixel 11 models use the Tensor G6 chip and start at 256GB, after Google dropped the 128GB tier this year. TechRepublic reports Google tied the higher prices to rising memory costs; the Pixel 10 had launched at $799 with 128GB.

Strengths of the Pixel

Zoom per dollar is the clearest win. Google's comparison page lists a 5x telephoto on the regular Pixel 11 with Super Zoom up to 30x. The Pixel 11 Pro steps up to a 50MP main camera, a 48MP ultrawide and a 48MP 5x telephoto, with Pro Zoom up to 120x. The Pro's 42MP front camera is also far higher resolution than the 18MP selfie camera on the iPhone 17.

The update promise is the second win. The Pixel update policy says Pixel 8 and later get 7 years of OS and security updates, counted from when the phone first went on sale in the US Google Store. Feature drops can arrive during that window too.

Google's AI tools are already shipping on its own hardware rather than waiting on a beta. TechRepublic reports the Pixel 11 series brings new Gemini powered features along with Magic Capture. Every Pixel 11 also has Pixelsnap magnets, so magnetic chargers and mounts work without a special case.

Screens are bright as well. Google lists 3,000 nits peak on the Pixel 11 and 3,600 nits on the Pixel 11 Pro.

Weak spots of the Pixel

The Pixel is a great Google phone and a less natural fit for an Apple home. You give up iMessage and FaceTime as apps, and an Apple Watch will not pair with it.

Battery claims are harder to compare. Google says "30+ hours" for the Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro, measured its own way, while Apple quotes video playback hours. Neither number tells you how either phone handles your day, so check independent battery tests before you decide on stamina alone.

The value of the Pixel 11 also shifted this year. With the base price up $100, the gap to the iPhone 17 closed completely, so the Pixel no longer wins simply by being cheaper at the entry tier.

Moving between iPhone and Pixel

Switching is less painful than it used to be. Apple's Move from Android to iPhone guide uses the Move to iOS app over a temporary Wi-Fi link, and it carries contacts, messages, photos, calendars and WhatsApp chats. Phones on a compatible version of Android 17 can now transfer by scanning a QR code without the app. Music, books and PDFs still have to be moved by hand.

Going the other way, Google's transfer guide for Pixel has you scan a QR code from the iPhone on Pixel 10 and later, then pick what to copy. The upgraded flow on Pixel 8 and later running Android 17 can move texts, iMessages, photos, contacts, apps and your eSIM. Two things trip people up: only photos stored on the iPhone transfer (iCloud Photos needs Apple's separate transfer tool at privacy.apple.com), and you should turn off iMessage and FaceTime in iPhone Settings so texts from iPhone friends do not vanish.

Which one to pick for your situation

  • You own a Mac, iPad or Apple Watch: get an iPhone. The iPhone 17 at $899 covers most people; step up to the 18 Pro only if you want the long zoom and variable aperture.
  • You live in Gmail and Google Photos: a Pixel 11 will feel at home from the first minute, and its 7 year update window suits people who keep phones a long time.
  • You care most about zoom on a budget: Pixel 11. A real 5x telephoto at $899 is something the iPhone 17 cannot match.
  • You want the best camera regardless of price: compare the iPhone 18 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro side by side in sample photos. Both are top tier, and the Pixel costs $100 less.
  • You want a foldable: the iPhone Duo is hard to buy right now, with shipping estimates slipping to late January, while the Pixel 11 Pro Fold costs $100 less.
  • You are torn between three brands: our iPhone vs Samsung comparison and smartphone buying guide can help you narrow it down.

One last check before you pay: confirm your carrier supports eSIM transfers for the phone you choose, and price out trade in credit. Apple currently advertises up to $1,200 off a new iPhone after trade in, so an old phone can change the math. More phone coverage lives in our gadgets section.
