iPhone Duo Cracked Screen Reports Pile Up Within Hours of Launch

Early iPhone Duo owners in the US, China and Australia say the inner display cracked along the hinge on day one. Apple has not commented, but at least one phone was swapped in store.

Key takeaways

  • Owners have posted photos of iPhone Duo inner displays cracked along the fold, with a line of damaged pixels running toward the right edge, within a day of the October 23 launch.
  • One Australian owner said the screen cracked after about six hours and fewer than 20 folds, and an Apple Store replaced the phone on the spot after phone support offered only an express swap with a full price hold.
  • Possible causes include mishandled demo units, a bad batch, or a hinge design flaw, and Cult of Mac considers the design flaw the least likely of the three.

Six hours. That is how long one Australian owner says their new iPhone Duo lasted before a crack sounded near the hinge and a bright white line ran down the inner display. By their own estimate, they had opened the phone fewer than 20 times.

Similar photos began circulating on Reddit on launch day, Friday, October 23, and iPhone Duo cracked screen reports have since come in from the US, China and Australia, according to Tom's Guide and Cult of Mac. Nobody yet knows how many units are affected, or why.

The damage follows the fold on the 7.6 inch inner display

The phones in the posted photos share one pattern. A crack runs along the fold in the middle of the 7.6 inch inner screen, and a strip of damaged pixels stretches toward the right edge. The outer display is not part of these reports.

Cult of Mac describes another owner who felt the hinge go stiff and heard a loud pop after about four folds. The Australian user said there were no outside marks on the phone and that they felt something near the internal hinge before the crack appeared. Reddit moderators labeled at least one widely shared claim as unverified, and Cult of Mac says it is too early to call this a widespread problem.

Tom's Guide also points to the JerryRigEverything durability test. In that video, dust got into the hinge despite the phone's IP68 rating and overpowered the magnets that hold it shut. A bend test left a permanent green line across the inner display, which eventually stopped responding. The inner screen also scratched at level 2 on the Mohs scale, while the Ceramic Shield 2 outer screen held out until level 7. Host Zack Nelson said most folding phones he has tested since the first generation survived his tests, and that the iPhone Duo did not.

Apple swapped one cracked phone in store

Apple has not commented publicly on the cracked screen reports. Tom's Guide says Apple support first offered the Australian owner an express replacement by phone, which required a hold for the full price of the handset and came with no delivery date. The owner went to an Apple Store instead, where staff apologized and replaced the phone on the spot. That suggests stores may have replacement units on hand.

The iPhone Duo costs $2,000. Tom's Guide notes that problems from normal use should be covered by Apple's one year warranty, and that buyers have a 14 day window to return the phone. Cult of Mac argues that a manufacturing defect should be replaced without question, and that if the cracks turn out to come from handling, it is a strong reason to buy AppleCare+.

Three explanations, none confirmed

Cult of Mac lists the theories being floated:

  • Demo units that were mishandled before or during launch.
  • A bad batch of displays or hinges.
  • An engineering flaw in the hinge itself.

The site rates the design flaw theory as the least likely. It points to Apple's hinge engineering, to early reviews that reported nothing similar, and to one reviewer whose unit survived thousands of machine folds.

A rocky first week for Apple's first foldable

The reports land in the middle of a launch Apple had every reason to celebrate. Demand pushed online iPhone Duo shipping estimates into January, and stores rationed stock so tightly that walk in buyers faced limited supply on launch day. Every phone sold so far is still inside the 14 day return window.

For anyone holding a new Duo, a few habits make sense this week. Photograph the inner screen and hinge in good light so you have a record of its condition. Open and close it gently, and pay attention to any stiffness or popping. If a crack shows up without a drop, the one documented case suggests a trip to an Apple Store is faster than a mail in replacement. Keep the return deadline in mind, too.
