Key takeaways

  • Starting with the iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3, macOS 27.3 and visionOS 27.3 betas, any developer can connect app content and actions to Siri AI using App Intents.
  • New app skills let Siri chain several actions across apps, and Siri AI can now surface any entity in the Spotlight semantic index.
  • Apple says the features ship to customers in a few months, App Store submission opens in the spring, and expanded access will carry a fee later.

Apple just gave every app maker a way into Siri AI. With the Siri AI developer preview, which arrived on November 3 alongside the iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3, macOS 27.3 and visionOS 27.3 betas, any developer can now connect an app's content and actions to Apple's new assistant. Until now, only a narrow set of app types could do that. Below are the questions iPhone owners and developers are asking, answered with what Apple has actually published.

What did Apple open up in the Siri AI developer preview?

In its developer announcement, Apple says any app can now bring its content and actions directly into Siri AI through App Intents, the framework developers already use for Shortcuts and widgets. Once connected, an app gets the same tools Apple's own apps use: personal context, awareness of what is on screen, and requests in natural language.

Apple's examples are ordinary errands, like checking a delivery, booking a reservation or placing an order. According to 9to5Mac, the first versions of Siri AI only worked with a much smaller set of supported schemas, so plenty of apps had no way in at all. That restriction is what this preview removes.

There is a quieter change too. Siri AI can now surface any entity stored in the Spotlight semantic index, not only items that fit one of Apple's predefined schemas. In practice, a recipe, a project or a saved route inside an outside app can become something Siri understands and can find.

What are Siri AI app skills, and how do they work?

Skills are the bigger idea. Apple describes them as a way to teach Siri AI how to combine several actions into a single experience. Instead of one intent doing one thing, a developer can describe a chain of steps that Siri runs in order.

Apple's documentation, as reported by 9to5Mac, includes a request like asking Siri to send your favorite sneakers to your partner in a named messaging app. Siri has to find custom content in one app, move it to another, and then act on it. Another example is a flight tracking app that maps which of its intents Siri should use for a given question.

9to5Mac also points out that with 27.3, users often won't need to say the app's name. If a ride share Live Activity is on screen, a request such as "change the ride address" can be routed to that app automatically.

Which Apple apps already use the new Siri AI features?

Apple says it rolled the capabilities out across its own apps first: Calendar, Files, Finder, Journal, Mail, Maps, Messages, Music, Notes, Photos, Preview, Reminders, Safari, Shortcuts and Weather. Those apps double as reference examples for developers deciding what their own integration should look like.

Why push this so hard now? The fight is over where people start their daily tasks. OpenAI, for instance, is merging ChatGPT's Chat and Work tabs into one screen to become that starting point. An assistant that can reach into thousands of apps already on your phone is Apple's counter.

When will iPhone users actually get Siri AI app integrations?

Not yet. This is a developer preview inside beta software. Apple says it offers early access before the features first ship to customers "in a few months," and that App Store submission for these experiences opens in the spring. Developers can build and test today, but the changes you would notice in your favorite apps are a 2027 story.

Apple also says thousands of developers had already built Siri integrations before this release, so some apps could be ready close to day one. The company is running Apple Intelligence Group Labs sessions on November 4 and 5 to walk developers through the tools.

Which devices and countries does Siri AI support?

The fine print matters here. Per Apple's footnotes:

  • You need an Apple Intelligence capable device set to a supported language.
  • Supported languages are English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, with Traditional Chinese, Norwegian, Turkish and Vietnamese listed as coming.
  • Siri AI is currently unavailable in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS.
  • It is not available to users under 13.

Storage is another practical limit. Apple Intelligence already takes a large chunk of space on some phones, as we covered when its footprint reached 15GB after iOS 27. China is on a separate track entirely, with Apple relying on Alibaba's Qwen models there.

Will Siri AI cost extra?

Possibly, for heavy users. Apple says server features, Siri AI included, come with daily usage limits, and that expanded access "will be available for a fee in the future." It has not said what that fee is, who pays it, or when it starts. Apple also says more details on terms and usage policies for Siri AI experiences are still to come.

That pricing question deserves attention given how closely Apple's costs are being watched. Its latest earnings already showed pressure from pricier memory chips, and running large models on servers is not cheap either.

What should developers do right now?

  1. Install the iOS 27.3 or macOS 27.3 beta on a test device that supports Apple Intelligence.
  2. Review your existing App Intents, since they are the entry point to Siri AI.
  3. Read Apple's Siri AI developer preview documentation and its guide to orchestrating complex actions with app skills.
  4. Add your app's key content to the Spotlight semantic index so Siri can find it.
  5. Book a Group Labs session if you have open questions.
